| Ocracoke
Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The entire island
is owned by the US National Park Service, except for the village. There
are ramps for beach access along Highway 12 (4WD vehicles only). There
are also parking areas so you can walk to the beach. There is a large
parking area at the southern end of Highway 12 between the Ferry Office
and the Ocracoke Preservation
Museum. The National Park Service also
has a Visitors Center with Public Rest Rooms in this area. The speed limit in the village is 20-25 MPH. In some areas you will have to slow down even more. Pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles must share the roads. The National Park Service provides well-maintained indoor public restroom facilities adjacent to the NPS Visitor Center, near the Cedar Island, Swan Quarter ferry terminal The NPS also provides a free, large public parking area near the Cedar Island, Swan Quarter ferry terminal. We encourage visitors to park and walk or rent a bike and please, where possible, stay off the road. Bicycles are vehicles so please bike on the right. During the summer months Highway 12 can be congested in the village. Please have patience. Our traffic jams only last a few minutes. Please drive with care, especially in the village. Pedestrians, please walk on the left, facing traffic. It is neither safe nor courteous to walk with your back to oncoming vehicles. Please recycle and separate your recyclables into the marked containers. The recycling facility is located at the entrance of the village. They will not accept "contaminated" containers. Fireworks are Illegal. Local ordinance prohibits the possession or discharge of individual fireworks in Ocracoke. Please be careful with fire anywhere on the island. |
